How to Choose the Right Brand of Air Conditioner

How to Choose the Right Brand of Air Conditioner

Spring time in Sydney is the best time to start shopping for a new air conditioning unit. The temperatures are variable but there’s enough heat in the air for you to know that it’s time to prepare for the months ahead. Then you get online and search the best air conditioner brand in Australia and you start to realise that in our climate, you are spoiled for choice.

When you consult an air conditioning buying guide and weigh up the pros and cons of each unit and their air conditioner specifications and features, it might be hard to distinguish one unit from another. Especially if they are at or around the same price point.

Well there’s a very good reason for that. The truth about the air conditioning business is that there are lots of brands but not that many manufacturers. Many of the brands that you know are made by the same companies and those brands are competing against one another.

For instance, Rheem owns Ruud and Carrier owns Bryant, Payne and Tempstar. The list goes on but I won’t because I think you get the point. In addition to that, all of those brands and manufacturers (even though we’ve established that there are more brands than manufacturers) purchase their components from only three companies:  Emerson, Johnson Controls, and Honeywell.

So now you’re informed and you’ve had a chance to check out the form guide, how do you decide? Well the answer is pretty simple, engage an installer and seek their opinion based on what they know of your home, the space you need to cool and your budget.

A great installer like Frozone will:inspect your home thoroughly including an inspection of your ductwork and insulation. He’ll look for any issues that are affecting your space and he’ll do some diagnostic testing before and after the new system is installed.

Things to consider

Energy efficiency is a major selling point for modern air conditioners. For example Inverter technology can provide a reduction of almost 30% on your energy consumption compared to older air conditioning technologies. All the more reason to do some diagnostic testing to make sure that your unit isn’t working harder than it needs to.

Your health and being able to sleep properly can be severely impacted by an old and inefficient air conditioning unit.

Old air conditioners had a basic mesh filter that collected particles and dust, but these days, modern air conditioning units include built-in ionisers, UV air filtration systems and antiviral and antioxidant filters. While you shouldn’t be completely depended on your air conditioner to regulate the quality of the air in your home, these features are a big plus, especially if you have people in your home who are susceptible to asthma or respiratory problems.

Other considerations like operating temperature range  should be considered. Sydney can get hot enough but there are some places where the temperatures really soar. It’s worth knowing that a system has the durability and capacity to perform in plus 40 degree temperatures.

The same applies to humidity. Humid climates can render your air conditioning unit useless if moisture builds within. Don’t make it worse by locating your unit near a kitchen or bathroom and don’t open doors and windows when the unit is running.
